#1. Rightly Dividing the Truth in a Post-truth World

post-truth: (adj) “relating to a situation in which people are more likely to accept an argument based on their emotions and beliefs, rather than one based on facts.”, 2016 Oxford Dictionary

Post-truth is especially relavent to 21st century communication technologies and cultural practices that package news as entertainment. The media feeds the public a constant diet of emotional journalism creating a false sense of knowledge. The low hanging subject matter is littered with misleading shallow information about many things, often to the point of disinformation. Ignorance can however, ultimately be remedied, unless of course we mistake it for knowledge.

The Apostle Paul encourages Timothy to be diligent and to present himself as a workman approved by God, and who should not be ashamed because he was rightly dividing (accurately handling) the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Studying the Scriptures is hard work. A cursory or brief scanning of Scripture can sometimes yield very wrong conclusions.

About

There is nothing new under the sun. [Ecclesiastes 1:9] Living on a ranch in the semi-arid Texas Hill County, this author watches a continuous cycle of feast or famine. Farming and ranching this area are a constant challenge to one’s intuition about the weather. We often feel rewarded to get a cloudy day just to break up the relentless sun.

About the author.

The Bible tells us that we should petition God with our prayers. [Colossians 4:2] It seems, regardless of faith, everyone living in this area prays for rain. My do-it-yourself lifestyle makes it difficult for me to ask anyone for anything, let alone God. In my past, I could never quite get into reading the Bible for any length of time. I had a desire to understand my feeling of a higher power but I just couldn’t place it.

Not long ago I was listening to a local preacher, who had taken his message to the radio in hopes of reaching a broader audience. I don’t remember the verse, but after only a few minutes in, I was overwhelmed to the point of tears. I couldn’t believe it, for some reason I understood what was being spoken to me. Since that day, I’ve been able to place my higher power in Jesus Christ.

As a trained software/network engineer, I spent a career learning systems from the bottom up. In system testing I would always look for anomalies across a broad range of sub-systems to sort our performance issues that a user might be experiencing. Being an engineer who spent a good deal of his career trying to break things in system test, I spent much of my initial Bible study looking for any inconsistency to disprove this is the actual Word of God.

My study has quickly grown beyond my initial need to verify what was being talked about. Now my need is to share God’s perfect Words with anyone who will listen. My hope is that speaking these stories to you will cause a similar reaction to mine when I heard God speak for the first time in that radio broadcast. [Romans 10:17]

In this podcast I seek to glorify Jesus Christ through scriptural reading and commentary. There truly is nothing of substance new under the sun, only new convenience. In the Truth of the Bible however, we can find newness of life. [Romans 6:4] My prayer is that my re-telling of these stories will allow God to inspire you as He has me.
